Future of Essential oils and Clinical Aromatherpay

By Dr.Steve John Chiola

Essential oil demand has experienced a huge surge in popularity for health and emotional management therapies ensuring diverse benefits.

The positive impact in treatments using aromatherapy in the past two decades has experienced a very fast uprise of interest not only thanks to the trend for people interested physical health and awareness of the benefits in natural medicine but thanks to the surging demand from hospital facilities, palliative care facilities, senior citizen care facilities! This has generated a surging request for the integration of Aromatherapy and Aromascience among practitioners, nurses, therapists, and spas, creating a that has a market request increase of 70% approximately.

We must take into consideration that there is a rapidly rising prevalence of various chronic and debilitating diseases among the population, healthcare costs are high, and consumers are moving evermore towards preventive care and alternative or integrative care products. The rising preferences for preventive care products are boosting the “interest and use” of aromatherapy. This is backed by the increase in scientific research evidence of the innumerous health and therapeutic benefits that an integrative aromatherapeutic approach ensures.

Aromatherapy offers an integrative treatment for various disorders such as cardiovascular diseases, pain, cough & cold, respiratory disorders, wounds, anxiety, insomnia, digestion issues, immune system dysfunction, dementia, Alzheimer’s, emotional and mood disorders.

In the clinical field I have mentored and coordinated various elder home care centers concerning behavioral and psychological symptoms of Dementia (BPSD) and Alzheimer disease where the medical problems included apathy, depression, psychosis, sleep disturbances agitation, restless behavior, inappropriate physical or verbal actions.

Various essential oils offered beneficial effects evidencing that Lavender oil, lemon balm oil, orange oil, and rose oil were all used for dementia-related agitation. The most used aromatherapeutic treatments were the exposure of different combinations of essential oils extracted from lemon balm, rosemary, or lavender in the morning and the evening.

Many Clinical Researches posed aromatherapy as promising remedy for geriatric syndromes which may threaten the independence of older adults. A randomized control trial showed that dementia-related agitation improved with aromatherapy and the studied population became more relaxed.

Bio Quantum Academy offers an International Integrative Medicine Educational Diploma Platform implementing a variety of integrative medicine certification courses and research diploma and the Naturopathic Department addresses clinical aromatherapy and Aromascience based on the true science and wisdom of natural medicine. Practitioners, nurses, holistic practitioners as well as health management personnel (health stores, Spa’s etc.) will benefit from the different educational interactive departments and Naturopathic Department offers a highly qualified and specific formative program in Aromatherapy (https://bioquantum.ca/department-of-naturopathy/).
