A “Glimpse” at Citrus Essential Oils: a True Gift of Nature

By Dr.Steve John Chiola

What are essential oils?

Essential oils are natural products extracted from medicinal plants, this is the scientific definition, but if we want to complete it, we must add that essential oils are aromatic molecules. Why is this important to know? It is important because these molecules are small enough to be absorbed by our skin and thanks to the penetration activate, various nervous receptors which help our body maintain a balanced physiological functionality.

For an aromatherapist it is fundamental to have a complete knowledge of the complete chemical composition of the essential oil, therefore it is necessary to have access to the certifications of the oil which should be released by the company producing the oil. This is essential, especially when we talk about the therapeutical value of an oil we utilize on a professional basis in aroma, science, and clinical aromatherapy.

Citrus oils are unique and extracted from the peel and withhold the “energy” of the natural elements of the environment where they mature.

These oils are extracted from the peel of citrus fruits, for example lemon, mandarin, grapefruit and lime. These oils represent a strong antioxidant activity thanks to a high-level of D limonene and enable our body to detox, freeing our body from the free radicals that can cause an oxidative problem within our metabolism. D-limonene or 4-isopropenyl-1-methylcyclohexene (C10 H16) is a monocyclic monoterpene and is abundant in citrus plants like lemon, orange, and grapefruit.

Citrus oils have dominant antioxidant properties that support the neutralization of free radicals that are responsible for damage to cells and tissues. Antioxidants can relieve stress on the immune system. Citrus essential oils are also effective in boosting the immune system.

Many studies report that D-limonene effectively plays a valuable role in the prevention of several chronic and degenerative diseases. Many studies evidence the therapeutic effects of limonene such as anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antinociceptive, anticancer (apoptosis mechanism), antidiabetic, antihyperalgesia, antiviral, and gastroprotective effects, among other beneficial effects in health. It is important to point out that Antioxidant activities

of bioactive macromolecules is important in regulating the redox state of the body and thereby, reducing the damage caused by diseases or drugs.

Being a solvent of cholesterol, d-limonene has been used clinically to dissolve cholesterol-containing gallstones. Because of its gastric acid neutralizing effect and its support of normal peristalsis, it has also been used for relief of heartburn and gastroesophageal reflux (GERD). D-limonene has well-established chemo preventive activity against many types of cancer. Evidence from a phase I clinical trial demonstrated a partial response in a patient with breast cancer and stable disease for more than six months in three patients with colorectal cancer.

Limonene applications could develop a useful targeting of innovative research in this field as well as the development of a limonene-based phytomedicine which could be utilized in a variety of conditions of health and disease. (“Limonene: Aroma of innovation in health and disease – PubMed”).

Citrus oils are also very energetic, and this is thanks to the longtime of exposition that the fruit matures to the sun and the elements of mother nature. Citrus essential oils, if they are not adulterated or oxidized, support many different physiological, emotional and energetic reactions that lead to a better quality of life and health.
